Ode to Ro

Just saw Rosie and Ross the Intern on Rosie's blog. What a fantastic example of a down to earth celebrity that Rosie is. She never let it go to her head that she is a big time star now. She remembers she was once an ordinary person like you and me.
Whenever I go to her blog, I feel like I am visiting a long time friend who I know will be real with me and be herself. Like a favored sister. It is hard to believe in this day of celebrity hotshots who act better than the rest of us and demand preferential treatment to feed some over inflated ego that hides their deep seated insecurity, that there is at least one who "gets" our desire to know about celebrity. Rosie seems to have not forgotten that she was once one of us. That deep down, she IS one of us.
I am starting to believe that most celebrities, deep down, are just ordinary folk. Maybe that comes with being over 40 now. I once thought they were the untouchables, demigods predestined to walk as the elite among the commoners. Rosie helped bust that myth for me. More celebrities should follow her lead and let the world know they are just people like you and me.
Now, I realize that there are sickos in the world who want nothing more than to prey on the famous and not so famous for their own twisted desires, but most of us just want to connect somehow with someone we have come to know and love through their work. Rosie gets that....she just does.
I admire Rosie's conviction and strong opinions. It is clear she still sees the world through the eyes of her upbringing and the foundation we all had growing up and learning how to be fair. The world just doesn't seem balanced right now. Too few with too much of the power. Corrupted. Greedy. Clinging to the deep seated desire to hang on to their power. The dehumanization of war, poverty, illness, religion, politics and business. All of those things mean nothing without people!
Rosie gets that anything you do for the betterment of people, is worth doing. The enemy our men and women are fighting in Iraq has no face. There is no base to bomb, no fort to storm, no organized troops to combat. Why continue fighting a war that cannot be won or even strategized? Peace will come when our threatening presence is removed. Sure, civil war will take place until the more powerful group emerges, but isn't that what we did to the Native Americans? America's power was strengthened by our ability to negotiate and diplomatically diffuse volatile situations. We lost that when we started a war with an invisible enemy.
So, Rosie. I get you. I hear you. I value the voice you have that speaks for many of middle America, who are too busy commuting 2 hours a day, working 8-10 hours a day, and trying to carve out a piece of the American dream for ourselves to fight the powers that limit us. I can vote. I can email my representative. I can do what I can when I can. Keep speaking for me.
